ALOHA!

Played from the heart and soul through the fingers, and flowing with vivid tropical images, Hawaiian ki ho'alu is truly one of the great acoustic guitar traditions in the world.

In slack key, some of the strings are slacked from the standard tuning, with the thumb playing the bass while the other fingers play the melody and improvise in a finger-picked style.

One of the most acclaimed Hawaiian concerts to ever leave the islands, the Southern California Slack Key Festival takes fans on a Hawaiian musical journey that showcases Grammy-winning slack key artists, the best hula dancers in the world, special guest performers and an Island Marketplace.

The sounds of slack key can be heard on the GRAMMY- nominated soundtrack for The Descendants, the first major motion picture to feature Hawaiian ki ho’alu music exclusively in its soundtrack; many of the artists from the recording have appeared in the festival, including Keola Beamer, Cyril Pahinui, Jeff Peterson, Dennis Kamakahi, Makana and more. Be sure to join our email list at the top of this page to receive festival updates and details on special workshops with the artists.
